Catamount to Horsethief Park
This is a favorite ride of mine. I try to get up here at least once a year. Be prepared for some killer scenery, hard climbs, and a really awesome downhill just before a gut wrenching soul crushing climb back to where you parked;).
Getting There
- Drive west on HWY 24 out of Colorado Springs.
- Drive west through Woodland Park.
- After the hospital look for your first left. This is Edlowe Road
- Turn left onto Edlowe Rd.
- Drive to the end of the road till you reach the trailhead parking lot. It's on your left. You can't miss it.
Trail Description
Leaving the parking lot ride up to the gate for Catamount Reservoir. Take a right as you pass through the gate. Follow the trail. You will have a very short climb followed by a downhill to the reservoir. Once to the road, go right.
Follow the road until it turns into a two track, and eventually single track. Follow the main trail till you reach the saddle. Go right, and then a quick left down. Follow this jeep trail down. You will go to a clearing and shortly after the clearing look left. This trail will take you over to the Crags. Once there, you come out into a parking lot.
Pass through the parking lot and go left on the road. Climb past the Crags trailhead and campground all the way till the road ends. There will be a trailhead on your right. Follow this trail up and down till you get to another clearing. This is where it gets interesting. Take a quick right, but before you head into the clearing look left. This is where the trail will take you to Horsethief.
Once at Horsethief, follow the trail down to a stream crossing. From here you can continue riding up Pancake Rocks to your left. The trail ends at the tip, and the climb is a KILLER on a bike, but it's doable.
