Buffalo Creek to Colorado Trail to Mt Baldy Trail
This trail sits south of HWY 285 out of Denver, and 50 miles or so north of Woodland Park. The trail covers much of the old burn areas from two major forest fires. The last one was the Hayman fire which burned 138,000 acres and 132 homes. Still, this ride provides some great forested areas where weren't lost. It is definitely worth the trip for a ride.
Getting There
- From Denver take HWY 285 to Pine Junction.
- Go south on HWY 126 to Buffalo Creek Ranger Station.
- Park on the East side of the road.
- From Woodland Park take HWY 67 north to HWY 126.
- Park on the East side of the road at the Buffalo Creek Ranger Station.
Trail Description
This track takes you from Buffalo Creek to Colorado Trail, and back into Buffalo Creek with an awsome downhill on Mt Baldy Trail. Park at the Ranger Station on 285 in Buffalo Creek. Ride 200 feet north to your first left up the closed road. You will ride a couple of miles until you see Shinglemill trail on your left. Ride up the trail through the old burn area until you reach the saddle. Go left at the saddle, continuing up until you reach the road. Cross the road for Colorado Trail. When you get to the T, go right. Follow the trail, passing Tramway trail and the turn for Green Mountain. Take a right at the next trail and ride down through the camping and picnic areas until you get to the road. The track takes a right on the road, but you also have the option of continuing on Colorado Trail, and then taking Red Feather Trail into Buffalo Creek. If you follow the track, you will take your first left up the road, and then a right onto forest road 554, riding up (if you're riding down, you went the wrong way). Ride through the fence, continuing up on Gashouse trail until you reach the turn for Mt Baldy. You will take a slight down for about a half mile before you get a short steep climb. At the top, the fun begins. This is nice, fast downhill until you reach the road which takes you back to where you parked.
