Rampart Reservior
This is one of the most revered trails near Colorado Springs. It is a high mountain lake with a trail that surrounds it. The trail provides wonderful rolling hills, and is fun and fast. While there are no mountains to climb, you still have the option. In addition, if you have never been there, take a camera. You will want to stop to take pictures.
Getting There
- Take HWY 24 out of Colorado Springs to Woodland Park.
- Turn Right at the McDonald's. This is Rampart Range Road.
- Go through the four way stops and up the road past the schools till you reach the fork.
- Go right at the fork.
- Climb the steep hill and go Right at the intersection.
- Stop when you reach the dirt parking on your left known as Rainbow Gulch. If you drive to the gate for the reservoir they will charge you a use fee for your vehicle.
Trail Description
The first mile of this trail is a downhill. You know you're getting closer when you hear the rushing water coming from an underground feeder stream from Pike's Peak. You will then go down to the lake. Stay left. This is the traditional way, and it will ensure that you see few oncoming riders. Also, this is the longer side of the lake. Don't be fooled by your seeing the dam and thinking it is close. It's isn't. The trail has many fingers, and you will go back into them before you get to the dam. Once you make it to the dam, don't go back the way you came thinking it will be a shorter route. It won't. The track offers two ways to get back. One section will cut off about a mile. Also, there won't be much climbing on the way back till you reach the road to the lake. It is also recommended that you no take the paved road thinking it will be a shorter way back. It won't. Stick to the track and you will be fine.
