This trail is north of the small resort town of Mt. Crested Butte. Most people park at the dirt lot just north of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Gothic. You can park on the left or right side of the dirt road. On the way there you will pass aspen groves, and beautiful views of the East River in the lower valley. 401 is a favorite ride for all who live and visit the Crested Butte area. Start from the resort, or from town to make a full day of the ride.
Getting There
- Take Gothic Road north out of Mt. Crested Butte.
- Pass through Gothic about 1/4 mile and park on the side of the road.Drive slow through Gothic. It's a courtesy.
Trail Description
Ride north up Gothic road to the top of Scofield Pass. The climb up the road is easy with awesome views of the valley and Emerald Lake. At the top of the pass, go right. If you start riding downhill from here you have gone too far. The next few miles will be a series of gut wrenching switchbacks till you reach the top of the mountain. After you crest the summit, get ready for one of the greatest downhill single tracks in the country. You will bomb down for several miles till you reach your first road. Head right down the road to a picnic area, and pick your way through to the trees to a wooden bridge. From here you start climbing again. You will go past a house on your right and a sign that will lead you to the trail and road that take you back down to where you parked. The trail is full of baby head rocks, and ruts, to be prepared to have tired arms.
