Catamount to Waterfall Trail
Catamount is a set of lakes between Woodland Park and Divide. They are connected to the Catamount trail system. The initial trail is open year around, however, for some odd reason which no one with any intelligence can explain, the city of Colorado Springs has decided to close access to the reservoir for most of the year. The trail is only open around the lakes from May to October. However, you can still take the time to ride many of the other trails in the area.
This trail starts at the Catamount trail, and then runs south toward the Crags and Menonite Camp areas. This is a hidden waterfall that is ridden by many of the Woodland Park locals, and others in the know. So don't tell anyone;).
Getting There
- Take HWY 24 from Colorado Springs past Woodland Park.
- When you get to the top of the hill (called Bluebird Hill) after you leave town, take a left on Edlowe Road.
- Drive Edlowe all the way to the end. Once you hit the dirt, you will see the parking area on your left.
Trail Description
Ride the trail out of the parking lot and take a right after you go through the gate. Ride the trail down to the dirt road. You will climb a little, and go down a lot before you get there. Take the road right all the way to the end, going over the cable across the road. Continue your climb until it turns to single track and jeep road. When you see your first left up, take it and climb to the saddle. From here take a right, and quick left down. Stay left on the road descending down through a pasture area. Once you are past the pasture, look to your left and take the first jeep trail you see. There are a some short ups, and downs, but to find the waterfall can be tricky. If you have a GPS and downloaded the track then you are fine. If not, the best way to explain the left you will need to take is when you start seeing the ring the peak pins. At one point you will be between two pins within 50 feet of each other. You will want to go left up here. The trail is hard to find, but eventually opens up. You will climb a steep sandy climb from here. Once you peak, the trail will wind down to your right. You will have a large tree near the bottom of the descent. Once past the fallen tree look for a hairpin left. This will be very hidden. From here take the trail down. The trail is very very technical. You will ride through the waterfall at points. Take the downhill until in opens up back into the valley where you started your climb up toward the waterfall. There is no real trail here, so just pick spot and cross the sand gullies back to the road to your left. Ride the road past the cable gate again, and keep looking for the trailhead to your left. This trail is part of the Catamount trail system and provides some great single track back to the parking area. Really the best way to follow this is to have the track loaded to your GPS.
