Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek
Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek is a right of passage for local cyclists. While not technical, and mostly dirt roads, it delivers in majestic views, and just all out grindage. In the .gpx file provided, you have the option of riding the road up, and back as well as the addition of some exciting single track on the way back. DO NOT ATTEMPT to do the single track on the way up. You'll just be walking.
Getting There
- Take I-25 to the Cimmeron Exit (HWY 24).
- Take HWY 24 West to 26th Street
- Go left (South) on 26th Street.
- Go Left on 26th Street. You will climb up and drive a couple of tight turns till you get to a four way stop.
- Turn Right a the four way stop till you get to the parking lot at the bottom of high drive. This is where you will start and end your ride.
Trail Description (Getting to Cripple Creek)
The first profile below is for the way out, and the second is the way back if you choose the single track downhill. Park at the bottom of Hight Drive, and ride up the paved road (Gold Camp Road) till it turns into dirt. Then continue riding up through two old tunnels until you get to the parking lot where Gold Camp is gated off. This is the closed section of Gold Camp road that until recently was supposed to be re-opened for vehicles. When you get on the road you will see why it will never be re-opened. CAUTION...DO NOT TAKE HIGH DRIVE UP. You can't miss High Drive, it's the gate with the steep hill. You want to take the closed gate at the far end of the back end of the lot. Once through the gate you will pass several trail heads to Buckhorn, and Seven Bridges. Keep riding up the road. When you come to the collapsed tunnel, ride to the left and over the top, coming down on the right on the opposite side. Continue to ride up till you intersect with Old Stage Road. There is a slight single track on your left and you will see at the two roads meet. Take this short section down onto the road. From here you will have a slight downhill and then a switchback right as you keep climbing to what provides one heck of a view of Colorado Springs and the entire front range. At this point most of the major climbing is complete till you get to the highway. After reaching the highway, go left. You will start with a gradual downhill, until a steep road climb to the top of Victor Pass. Once you reach the top of the pass, you will have a long downhill into the old mining town of Victor. You will then go through town, along the highway, and enjoy more downhills and some smaller climbs into Cripple Creek.
