Upper Loop/Strand Hill

Upper Loop and Strand Hill are popular rides in the Crested Butte area. Upper Loop skirts along the face of Mt. Crested Butte, and over the top of some beautiful homes and the local golf course. Strand Hill takes you out into open ranch land and into the mountains on the other side of Mt. Crested Butte from town.

Getting There

  • Start at the Crested Butte Chamber and ride through town to the Upper Loop trail.

Trail Description

This trail is like most in Crested Butte in that it is full of baby heads, tree roots, and other obstacles. Take care on the downhills as you never know when something like a tree will jump out in front of you. The Upper Loop trail has many challenges, not the least of which is the climb to the top where you pass an old rock avalanche. The challenge is to stay on your bike. When you get to the end of the trail, you will go left on Brush Creek Road to the second gate on your right. This will take you up Strand Hill and back into beautiful aspen groves. The trail loops around and brings you back to Brush Creek Road. You can either take Upper Loop back to town, or take the road out to the highway as the track shows.
