Doctor Park

This trail begins and ends at Taylor Canyon.  However, you can connect Deadmans and other trails to the north as well.  Just keep in mind that doing so will mean one heck of a long day.

Getting There

  • Take 135 North out of Gunnison, to Almont and go East.  Or take Cottonwood pass out of Buena Vista to Taylor Canyon.
  • Park just east of the small resort town or east of Hwy 744.

Trail Description

Ride up Spring Creek road for about nine miles.  This is a gradual climb and can be done in the big ring for much of it, and none of it needs a granny gear.  It is a very gradual climb.  When you get near road 554, the valley will open up, and as you climb you will see a road on your right with Spring Creek running over it.  This is road 554 and I have a waypoint on the map.  The road is not marked, but once you get near the water you should see a pin (if someone didn't pull it up) with 554 written on it.  Take this road up about a mile to a fork.  This track shows the route to the left.  If you want a shorter ride, you can go right.  This will take at least an hour off your day if not more.  It will also take you to the best part of the downhill.  When taking 550, you will climb for two miles until you get to an opening in the trees.  There is a great view here, and an alternate route of 550.B will be on your right.  Stay on 550 and ride down to the bottom of the gully.  This is where your climbing will start.  You will be hiking and biking for the next 1.5 miles.  The climb is grueling if for no other reason than you're tired.  You will crest the climg at 11600ft.  From here you start traversing down.  Make sure you take the left at the sign for Doctor Park.  You have another three miles from here until the trail opens again.  Go left at the sign.  This will take you down the singletrack.  When you get to a fork from here stay right (up) and traverse across the meadow until you get the option to ride down again.  At this point hold on.  The next few miles are fast and fun!  You will eventually come out at Taylor Canyon.
