Chutes to Buckhorn

The Chutes are named for a trail that runs from Gold Camp Road down to the Stratton Open Space. There are many options in the area with trails along the low lands, as well as climbs up into Cheyenne Canyon. The area is a great place to cycle or run. It is also a favorite spot for taking the dog for a walk.

Getting There

  • Take I-25 to the Cimmeron Exit (HWY 24).
  • Go west to 21st street.
  • Take 21st street/Cresta till you reach Cheyenne Rd.
  • Go right.
  • Turn Right on Ridgeway. This will take you to the parking lot.

Trail Description

This track runs up the Chutes to Columbine, to Buckhorn, and back via Capt'n Jacks and the Chutes.  Head up the Chutes and go left on Gold Camp Road.  You will head up the road until you go through the first tunnel.  Look to your left for the trail immediately after the tunnel.  There is a trail just before the tunnel as well, both leading down to Columbine Trail.  Columbine has been carefully maintained, and is in great shape for a ride up.  Continue on Columbine until you come out at Helen Hunt Falls.  Climb up the paved road and take a left through the parking lot and though the gate at the back.  Take your first right up Buckhorn, and climb until you reach the saddle.  From here you will take a right, and eventually head down to High Drive.  Cross High Drive and go left out the single track, taking you back into the woods.  Continue on the main trail until you reach Gold Camp again, reversing your route and heading down the Chutes.
