403 and Snodgrass

This trail is north of the small resort town of Mt. Crested Butte. A good place to park is either at Rustler's Gultch, or somewhere near the Gothic camp ground past the small town of Gothic.  You will come out at the Washington Gultch trail head if you do the loop the way the track is laid out.

Getting There

  • Take Gothic Road north out of Mt. Crested Butte.
  • Pass through Gothic and park on the side of the road.Drive slow through Gothic. It's a courtesy.

Trail Description

Ride back the way you came through Gothic.  This wil take you back to the Snodgrass trailhead.  Ride up the hill past the pond, and then tike a right on the single-track, continuing to go up over the hill.  You will then go down into the trees.  The trail has two branches once you get into the trees.  Follow the track, or just take the center trail which will turn left and take you up the ridge.  It gets steep here.  Once at the top, ride down along the fence until you get to the wood steps over the fence.  Cross the road, and just stay on the single-track until you get to Washington Gultch Road.  Once there, to right and you will begin the long climb to 403.  This is a very active road, depending on the time of day.  Be prepared for awsome views.  You will crest the climb when you see a parking area on your left, and 403 on your right.  Take the time to look at the view down the valley.  Once on the single-track you will climbe another 300ft in elevation before starting the descent.  Follow the track.  There are a few turnoffs that can get cofusing.  You also pass an old mine at the start of this climb which is kind of cool.  The descent is VERY steep, and technical in spots.  But all in all it's an awsome ride!
