Wheeler to Miners Creek Trail
This is one of my favorite rides, if for no other reason than it freaks out the hikers when they see you on a bike on the trail. They just can't fathom the ability for anyone to ride above treeline. The best way to do this ride is to park at the Bike Trail at I-70 and Main Street in Fisco. This makes the climb a lot better than going the other way. However, if you like a single-track downhill, ride Peaks Trail to Wheeler, and Miners Creek access.
- Go to the Bike Trail parking lot just off I-70 and Main Street in Frisco.
- Go right once you enter the bike trail.
- Take the dual track just before you reach Copper and ride to the Wheeler trailhead.
The way this track illustrates, take the bike trail toward Copper Mountain. When you get past the ponds, and just before the parking lot for the gas station, follow the gas line access road toward Wheeler Creek trail. Take a left on the trail and begin your ride up. This is a great single-track, and one steep climb. Ride until you get to the first intersection. Take the trail left. Ride up above treeline. This takes you across peaks 4, 5, and 6. Once you are past peak 4, the fun begins. This trail is rough and loose, but will take you down to Peaks trail which you can then ride back to Mt. Royal trail. When getting off Peaks trail you can either take the road down to the bike trail, and back to the car, or go straight across the road and ride up to Mt. Royal trail for a nice technical traverse across the face, and then back down to where you parked. For a 20 mile ride, this is a long day on the bike, but a fun one!
