Edge Loop (Rope Rapel)

Fruita offers some great rides. If it were not for the fact that there are no trees on some of the trails, it would be the perfect mecca. The trails are like glass for the most part, unlike Crested Butte. And unlike the Colorado Springs area, they are made up of dirt rather than crushed granite. Make sure you ride this trail on a calm day. The dust from high winds could be murderous.

Getting There

  • Take I 70 to Fruita.
  • Go North on Cherry (this heads away from the hotels toward town).
  • Take your first right (Aspen) at the intersection.
  • Go around the traffic circle and through downtown.
  • Take a left on Maple.
  • Maple turns into 17 1/2 road outside town.
  • Turn Right on N 3/10.  This is the last turn BEFORE a left hand curve.
  • Turn left at the T.  This is 18 1/2 road.
  • Drive till you see a nice parking area and bathrooms on your left.  There is also camping up this road.

Trail Description

If you follow the track, you will head northwest from the parking lot toward bookcliffs.  Ride this trail until you hit joes ridge, and Zippidy.  Keep riding north toward the backside of the Book Cliffs to Coal Gulch Road aka V 8/10 Road. Ride up the road keeping right at the fork.  When you take the right fork, you will start climbing.  Stay on the main road heading toward the pump house.  Once past the pumphouse you will see a great view of the valley.  Ride the road down, keeping on the main trail.  The trail will eventually get very steep, leading you into a stream bed.  Ride the stream bed left until you get to the rope rapel.  Climb down the rope, and continue on the stream, heading in and out on interspersed trails.  You will eventually come out to a T.  Go left, and down if you are tired.  However, if you want more climbing, ride up to the Edge Cutoff trail, and take some of the single track near the cliffs.  No matter which way you go you will eventually end up on the road where you parked.
