Catamount to Mt Esther

Catamount is a set of lakes between Woodland Park and Divide.  They are connected to the Catamount trail system.  The initial trail is open year around, however, for some odd reason which no one with any intelligence can explain, the city of Colorado Springs has decided to close access to the reservoir for most of the year.  The trail is only open around the lakes from May to October.  However, you can still take the time to ride many of the other trails in the area.

This trail runs past the upper and lower lakes of Catamount and down to Mt Esther, and the Pike's Peak Highway.  It's an out and back ride, with awsome trails and views.  You will want to take the time to stop and take pictures.  Also, don't ride on the highway and expect to get to trails on the other side.  There are many gates and stops along the way, and it will only be chance that you won't get caught by the Pike's Peak folks.  They don't take kindly to bicycles on the road there.

Getting There

  • Take HWY 24 from Colorado Springs past Woodland Park.
  • When you get to the top of the hill (called Bluebird Hill) after you leave town, take a left on Edlowe Road.
  • Drive Edlowe all the way to the end.  Once you hit the dirt, you will see the parking area on your left.

Trail Description

Ride the trail out of the parking lot and take the left through the gate.  It will be at the top of your first climb.  Go left after the gate and take the trail to the next road.  From here take the left and ride up until you see the next trail pin on your right.  Take the jeep road/trail down and ride along the trail, making sure the lakes are in sight.  Cross the damn, and take the first road left down the road.  You will be taking this road the wrong direction, so watch for cars.  After about a mile, you will see and small cul de sac with a trash can.  Follow the track, or just ride up the very overgrown trail to the next road.  Go right and down and follow that road until you see the pins for the Ring the Peak trail.  Follow the single track until you get to the paved road.  It is here you will have to turn around and ride back up.  Or, you can catch the trail north which takes you down Mt Esther trail.  This is a killer technical downhill which takes you to Green Mountain Falls.  From here I would suggest riding back up the trail.  It would be a VERY long way to ride the road back to Catamount on Highway 24.
